When you walk into Rosebrook Developmental Centre, you are immediately engulfed by the passion and love that the staff have for the children. Each child is treated equal and respected for who they are and not what they do. The model at Rosebrook Developmental Centre helps to build inclusion in the most natural way – through daily interaction. No child is singled out for what they cannot do but rather they are given the opportunity to develop their various developmental skills in their own time.
The academic material is playful and engaging, this allows any child to learn through the best possible way – play. Each activity though planned with a main teaching focus carries with it many other lessons as well. When you see children throw water balloons covered in paint onto a blank canvas, they are not just creating art. They are learning about the effects of force on an object when it bounces off a wall or when the balloon stretches from the weight of the water in it. When children create art using various food items, they are learning about the food textures, smell and colour. These are little steps that build familiarity towards the food item, which will peak a child’s curiosity about the food item, especially a new one. And as this curiosity peaks, the child is then more inclined to choose to place the food item in their mouth and discover its taste.
The beauty behind the education at Rosebrook Developmental Centre however, goes beyond the academic material. It is the opportunity to see that every person with or without special needs is equal and that everyone possesses their own set of strengths and weaknesses.
It is a place where inclusivity is not just a buzz word, but one that is lived and experienced every single day. The graduates from Rosebrook Developmental Centre will carry with them these life experiences, enabling them to share with the rest of society that inclusivity is not just a buzz word but a much needed and better way of living.
